The present-day establishment known as the Means Tool Company was established by Lynwood Means, who initiated this venture after completing his service in the Navy. Upon his return, Lynwood embarked on the next phase of his career as a toolmaker at Texas Instruments, where he honed and developed his skills in this field. Following this, he assumed the position of a foreman at Woodford Tool and Gauge. During the mid-1970s, when the economic downturn struck, the company encountered financial difficulties. To address this, Lynwood and his business partner James Gay made individual investments thereby attaining co-ownership of the struggling company and turning it into what is known as Means Tool Co., LLC today.
Sustaining Kentucky's Legacy
Community, Craftsmanship, and Connection
In 1978, the foundation of what would become the present-day Means Tool Co. was laid, and the company began operations specializing in the production of custom-made components for typewriters, lighting, and automotive factories located in Kentucky. In 2006, a pivotal transition in ownership transpired as Lynwood, the founder, made the decision to step back and retire. It was during this time that Greg Means, the youngest son of the family, ascended to the role of CEO. Under Greg's leadership, the company expanded its reach into diverse sectors, encompassing equine and bourbon domains. This evolution reflects its profound influence in bolstering a range of industries that form the tapestry of Kentucky's heritage.
Forging a Shared Future
Means Tool Company's involvement in both the equine and bourbon industries goes beyond the mechanical. It reflects a commitment to nurturing the community and preserving Kentucky's rich heritage. By providing engineers with the tools they need to excel, the company reinforces the interconnectedness of these industries, solidifying their contributions to the state's economy and cultural identity.
In the heart of the bourbon and equine capital of the world, Means Tool Company stands as a testament to the fusion of tradition and innovation. By crafting custom parts that empower the engineers of both the equine and bourbon industries, the company weaves a narrative that extends beyond the machinery – it's a story of community, craftsmanship, and collaboration.
